304 Stainless Steel Built-in Braais
304 stainless steel is the general premium grade for built-in braais. It suits most inland installations, outdoor braais in towns that lie inland in a coastal province (such as George and Stellenbosch), and enclosed patios at the coast. Our Standard 304 built-in braais come in 800, 1000, 1200 and 1500 mm widths, each with a 2 mm 304 stainless steel body, stainless steel door or doors, ember maker, light fitting and ash pan.
About Best Braais
Best Braais & Fireplaces, established in 2002, is the South African producer of the Best Braais range of built-in braais. Our own branded units are manufactured locally in South Africa, with a lead time of approximately 10 to 15 business days. We also supply gas braais, fireplaces, flues and cowls.
Free delivery applies to qualifying built-in braai and fireplace units delivered to Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, Bloemfontein, George and Ballito, and to many other South African towns; eligibility for your town is confirmed at checkout. Flues and cowls ordered together with a unit also ship free. Accessories and parts ordered on their own are charged for delivery at checkout.

What makes 304 stainless steel different
304 is an austenitic stainless steel with roughly 18 percent chromium and 8 percent nickel. The nickel gives it better corrosion resistance than 430 stainless steel, which is a ferritic grade without nickel. 304 has no molybdenum, so it is less resistant to salt-air pitting than 316 marine grade.
When to choose 304
- Inland, outdoors or under a roof (for example Johannesburg, Pretoria, Bloemfontein): 430 or 304 is normally sufficient. Choose 304 if you want extra corrosion resistance.
- Inland, near a large dam (for example Hartbeespoort, Vaal Marina or Midmar), outdoors: 304 is the first choice, especially on the water's edge. 430 is a budget option for a covered position or one set back from the water.
- Inland town in a coastal province (for example George or Stellenbosch), outdoors: 304 is the primary recommendation. On an enclosed patio, 304 or 430 is suitable.
- Coastal town, outdoors (exposed or covered by a roof or lapa): 316 is the first choice. 304 is the lower-cost alternative and needs more regular rinsing with fresh water.
- Coastal town, fully enclosed patio or indoors: 304 is suitable.

Which ranges are available in 304
- Standard built-in braais: 800, 1000, 1200 and 1500 mm (listed below). Standard units are fixed sizes and cannot be customised.
- 1200 Combination braai: wood and charcoal plus a 2 burner gas grill (listed below).
- 1200 freestanding patio braai: includes a 1.2 m flue and louvre cowl (listed below).
- Insert braais: 1000 and 1200 mm Standard insert braais, and table top insert braais from 700 to 1200 mm. See the table top insert braai reference.
- Flues and turbo cowls in 304 stainless steel to match.
Our DeLuxe, Professional, Spit and Double-Sided ranges are mild steel units. Some models can be made in 304 stainless steel on special order. None of them is made in 316.
Flue and cowl for a 304 built-in braai
The flue and cowl are sold separately for the built-in models. Matching 304 sizes:
- 800 and 1000 mm: 300 mm diameter flue and 400 x 400 mm turbo cowl.
- 1200 mm: 350 mm diameter flue and 400 x 400 mm turbo cowl.
- 1500 mm: 500 x 350 mm rectangular flue and 600 x 400 mm turbo cowl.
The braais are supplied for installation into brickwork by your own builder or installer; Best Braais does not offer an installation service. See the braai installation guidelines.
