430 Stainless Steel Built-in Braais
430 stainless steel is the value grade for built-in braais in inland South Africa. It suits outdoor and covered installations in inland towns, and indoor or fully enclosed installations. It is not suitable for outdoor use at the coast. Our Standard 430 built-in braais come in 800, 1000, 1200 and 1500 mm widths, each with a 2 mm 430 stainless steel body, stainless steel door or doors, ember maker, light fitting and ash pan.

What makes 430 stainless steel different
430 is a ferritic stainless steel with roughly 16 to 18 percent chromium and no nickel. It costs less than 304 and 316 and resists corrosion well in dry inland conditions. Without nickel it is less resistant to moisture and salt air than 304, which is why it is not used outdoors at the coast. 430 is magnetic; 304 and 316 are not.
When to choose 430
- Inland, outdoors or under a roof (for example Johannesburg, Pretoria, Bloemfontein): 430 or 304 is the normal choice. 430 is the value option; choose 304 if you want extra corrosion resistance.
- Inland, indoors or fully enclosed: 430 is suitable.
- Inland, near a large dam (for example Hartbeespoort, Vaal Marina or Midmar): 304 is the first choice outdoors, especially on the water's edge. 430 is a budget option for a covered position or one set back from the water.
- Inland town in a coastal province (for example George or Stellenbosch): 304 is the primary recommendation outdoors. On an enclosed patio, 430 or 304 is suitable.
- Coastal town (for example Cape Town, Durban, Knysna): do not use 430 for any outdoor installation, even under a roof or lapa. Choose 316, or 304 as the lower-cost alternative. 430 is acceptable at the coast only inside a fully enclosed building.
430 is corrosion resistant, not rust-proof. See our maintenance guide and steel grade and installation environment guide.
