316 Stainless Steel Built-in Braais

316 stainless steel is the marine grade we use for braais that have to survive salt air. It is the grade we recommend for outdoor braais in coastal towns such as Cape Town, Durban, Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) and Knysna, whether the braai stands in the open or under a roof or lapa.

About Best Braais

Best Braais & Fireplaces, established in 2002, is the South African producer of the Best Braais range of built-in braais. Our own branded units are manufactured locally in South Africa, with a lead time of approximately 10 to 15 business days. We also supply gas braais, fireplaces, flues and cowls.

Free delivery applies to qualifying built-in braai and fireplace units delivered to Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, Bloemfontein, George and Ballito, and to many other South African towns; eligibility for your town is confirmed at checkout. Flues and cowls ordered together with a unit also ship free. Accessories and parts ordered on their own are charged for delivery at checkout.

What makes 316 stainless steel different

316 is an austenitic stainless steel with added molybdenum (typically about 2 to 3 percent). The molybdenum improves resistance to chloride pitting, which is the rust spotting caused by salt spray. That is the main difference from 304 stainless steel, which has no molybdenum and is the general premium grade for most inland and sheltered installations.

When to choose 316

  • Coastal town, any outdoor installation (exposed or covered): 316 is the primary recommendation. 304 is the lower-cost alternative.
  • Coastal town, fully enclosed patio or indoors: 304 is normally sufficient.
  • Inland town in a coastal province (for example George or Stellenbosch), outdoors: 304 is the primary recommendation.
  • Inland (for example Johannesburg, Pretoria, Bloemfontein): 430 or 304 is normally sufficient. 316 is fully suitable as an optional premium upgrade if you want the extra corrosion resistance.
  • Simple rule of thumb: if the braai will be within about 5 km of the sea, choose 316.

316 is highly corrosion resistant, not corrosion proof. At the coast, rinse it with fresh water from time to time to remove salt deposits. See our maintenance guide and steel grade and installation environment guide.

Which ranges are available in 316

316 stainless steel is offered in our Standard built-in braai range, the Standard insert braai and the freestanding patio braai. The current models and live prices are listed below.

Our DeLuxe, Professional, Spit and Double-Sided braai ranges are not made in 316 stainless steel. These are mild steel units, and some models can be made in 304 stainless steel on special order. If you need 316-level protection for a coastal outdoor braai, choose a model from the 316 Standard range below.

316 stainless steel turbo cowls are available in selected sizes, so the cowl on the chimney can match the braai.
