Cowls

In Short, the function of a cowl is to eliminate downdrafts and allow airflow to move only in one direction and that is upwards. Contrary to popular belief, a cowl does not allow for a poorly designed chimney to function correctly. If your chimney is designed correctly it should render a good draw on its own, then a cowl is fitted to prevent downdrafts and rain water from coming down the flue stack.
